Brain Awareness Week takes place in March to highlight brain health and the impact of brain disorders. Throughout the week, the Brain Foundation hosts free webinars and provides resources to support Australians affected by brain diseases, disorders, and injuries. Brain diseases, disorders, and injuries affect millions of Australians, with roughly 2 in 5 people experiencing a brain disorder in their lifetime. Many of these conditions have no cure, limited treatments, and are growing in prevalence.
A significant part of this is the growing prevalence of dementia. It is the leading cause of death in Australian women and the second leading cause of death overall, and surveys show that dementia is the medical condition most feared by older Australians. Other conditions such as migraine, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy are not fatal, but can cause years of disability.
While scientists search for cures, we must focus on preventive healthcare. Brain Awareness Week aims to encourage proactive approaches to brain health. Through education and awareness, Australians can take control of their brain health by understanding risk factors, recognising early symptoms, and seeking medical advice when needed.
